The companion series of "The Walking Dead" has cast its leading lady, and it's none other than Kim Dickens.

Dickens, 49, will most probably play as Nancy Tomkins, "a thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there's an edge to her," Variety reports. According to Deadline, AMC considered a number of actresses for the role before Dickens landed the job.

The still untitled spinoff, dubbed "Cobalt," will take place in Los Angeles, which is a stark contrast from the Atlanta setting of "The Walking Dead." The companion series will come about during the same zombie apocalypse in AMC's popular zombie drama, the Deadline noted.

Dickens will reportedly star alongside Cliff Curtis, whose character is a guidance counselor in a relationship with Dickens' character. According to Variety, Nancy has two children from a previous marriage, who will be portrayed by Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey.

Dillane will be Nick, "a screwed up teenage son who is too old to stay home, but too scared to flee," and Debnam Carey will play as Ashley, "Nancy's mostly level-headed teenage daughter, whose ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother's failures," Variety reported.

Dickens previously starred in the thriller film "Gone Girl" as Detective Rhonda Boney. She also appeared in "Sons of Anarchy," "Friday Night Lights," "Deadwood," "Treme," "and Lost," according to Hollywood Life. The actress is also set to appear in the third season of "House of Cards."

Executive producers Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert of "The Walking Dead" will also oversee the spinoff series. Erickson, who co-wrote and co-created the pilot with Kirkman, will serve as the program's showrunner, Variety noted.

In a statement, Kirkman expressed his excitement for the companion series. He believes that the upcoming spinoff, which will not follow the events of the comic book where "The Walking Dead" is based on, will provide a clean slate.

"After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn't be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of 'The Walking Dead' universe," Kirkman said, as quoted by TV Line. "The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing."

The pilot of "Cobalt" will start shooting in early 2015. According to E! Online, the pilot episode "will feature scenes at a school and a hospital."
