Justin Lin is set to direct "Star Trek 3," weeks after Roberto Orci vacated the spot as the film's director, Deadline reports.
According to The Wrap, Lin will direct "Star Trek 3" after he finishes shooting the first two episodes of the second season of HBO's "True Detective." The filmmaker also previously helmed four of the "Fast and Furious" movies.
Deadline writes that Lin was first set to direct the "The Bourne Legacy" sequel starring Jeremy Renner, but since the movie was pushed back when Universal signed up Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass to do another installment for "The Bourne Identity," an opportunity opened for him to take on the "Star Trek 3" project instead.
Now that Lin is directing "Star Trek 3" from Paramount Pictures, SkyDance Productions, and Bad Robot, he won't have time to direct two "Fast and Furious" films anymore, The Wrap reports. Several filmmakers were mentioned in the past to direct "Star Trek 3," but Deadline notes that Lin was the only one who the film has been offered to.
Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk), Zoe Saldana (Nyota Uhura), and Zachary Quinto (Spock) will reprise their roles in the third "Star Trek" movie. They will be joined by Simon Pegg (Montgomery Scott), Karl Urban (Bones McCoy), Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov), and John Cho (Hikaru Sulu), The Wrap adds.
As for the reason behind Orci's exit, Badass Digest claims that it was because of a disagreement regarding the script of the third installment. Screenrant reports that back in August, Orci announced that the first draft of the movie's script was completed. But it seems like they might be starting from scratch.
"I've been in touch with some folks and it seems like the script was one of the problem factors. Paramount shut the production down last month, sending home all the design people while they battled over the direction of the screenplay," Devin Faraci of Badass Digest reports.
The film will be produced by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and Orci. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg from Skydance will serve as executive producers, according to The Wrap.
Abrams previously directed the first two "Star Trek" films, but he backed down from the sci-fi movie's third installment in order to focus on "Star Wars," Entertainment Weekly notes.
"Star Trek 3" is aimed to come out in theaters in 2016. This is to correspond with the 50th anniversary of the original "Star Trek" TV series, The Wrap reports.
