A Colorado man is in critical condition after fatally shooting his 19-month-old daughter and then shooting himself Monday morning.

Right before the man shot his daughter, he posted an endearing photo of himself with the adorable toddler on Facebook, said authorities in Westminster, according to CBS Denver.

The shooting occurred after the suspect, who has been identified as 22-year-old Merrick McKoy, got into a domestic altercation with the mother of his child, Kimphone "Kim" Phanthavongsa, 21, that same morning. 

The mother said she awoke with her ex-boyfriend pointing his gun at her.  She immediately ran out the house to a neighbor's apartment where she called police and reported that McKoy was locked inside her home with his gun and their precious daughter, Mia.

When police arrived at the apartment they found the baby, who was pronounced dead at a Denver hospital, and McKoy, who was suffering from a gunshot wound.

In addition to the last photo of baby Mia, McKoy also posted disturbing messages on Facebook, revealing his motive for the shooting. One of the posts read: "Don't judge me had no choice," and the other stated, "I told I I can't live without u lol u thought I was joking now me n Mia out this b---h," reports the New York Daily News.

CBS Denver reports that the mother of the victim had a restraining order against McKoy.

Police say because the mom was "hysterical" when she learned of her daughter's death, police have yet to interview her.

"We're trying to be very respectful of the fact that she tragically lost her child," said Investigator Cheri Spottke, adding that the incident is "particularly heinous."
