Titanfall may be the best new IP of 2014 when it is released on March 11, and the game also figures to be one of the biggest Xbox One exclusives when it is released. CFO of EA Games Blake Jorgensen recently spoke at the UBS Global Technology Conference, and revealed why the game publisher decided to make the game exclusive to the Xbox One and PC.
When it comes to Titanfall, Jorgensen explained that the partnership between EA and Microsoft is a fairly standard business deal that is best for both companies.
"That's a process that's been done through the industry for many years...There's lots of single-platform titles. Obviously, you work with the first-parties to make sure the economics make sense for all sides, and we made that decision on Titanfall," Jorgenson said, according to IGN.
Jorgensen also addressed the relationship between the developer of Titanfall, Respawn, and EA, stating that the publisher is helping the developer expand in areas beyond just developing video games:
"It's a business partnership. We're trying to make sure that we've developed a great relationship with them...We helped them on marketing, we helped them on development where they need it. And we try to maintain a strong partnership with them over time."
While the game may be only available on the Xbox One and PC, Jorgensen also left the possibility that future games in the series could arrive on the PlayStation 4. The exclusivity deal was set up between EA and Microsoft, so if EA wants to bring the game to other platforms they will be the ones to make it happen rather than Respawn. However, no details about a sequel have emerged, as Respawn is hard at work bringing Titanfall to gamers.
In addition to being one of the hottest games of 2014, Titanfall could be a landmark game for mixing single player storytelling and multiplayer gameplay. The game, which will require an Internet connection, will have traditional storytelling in multiplayer only gameplay. This means that groups of users will be able to affect how the story plays out based on the success of the team. That, combined with the combination of first person human combat and third person mech warfare will set the game apart and give it the potential to lead to a new style of gaming.
Look out for more Titanfall news right here as the game approaches its March 11 release date.
