The Heisman Trophy was won by a Hawaiian for the very first time, and Marcus Mariota's moment was very dramatic, the nation seeing him well up during his acceptance speech.
All this is after helping the Oregon Ducks take a 12-1 record, and the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, among others.
Here are five facts about him:
[1] He loves Hawaii.
"You (Hawaiian kids) should take this as motivation and dream big and strive for greatness," he said, per the New York Times.
"Ohana means family - that's it right there... In Hawaii, if one person is successful, the entire state is successful. To be a part of that, it's so special. It's hard to explain," he then told the audience.
Mariota, the first Duck to capture the award, also used Samoan in parts of his speech, and was wearing Hawaiian and Samoan leis.
[2] His parents are his soft spot.
They sold their house, with some of the money allocated for Mariota's football camp expenses, revealed ESPN Go, explaining why Mariota choked thanking them.
"[E]ven though you got to battle through the diversity, it will all work out in the end and, you know, for me I can't thank them enough because without their support and guidance, I wouldn't be here," he said in the interview.
[3] His records are just too impressive ESPN said "[they] turned the presentation ceremony at a theater in Times Square into a foregone conclusion."
"He leads the nation in passer rating (186.2), is fifth in total offense (342.5 yards per game)," explained ESPN Go.
According to the New York Times, Mariota made 53 touchdowns to garner 2,534 points or 90.9 percent of the perfect score, "the second-highest percentage of the modern era behind only Ohio State [Buckeyes] quarterback Troy Smith's 91.6 percent in 2006."
Those who took second and third spots this year, Melvin Gordon and Amari Cooper, were far behind — 1,250 and 1,023, respectively.
[3] Previous winners Jameis Winston and Johny Manziel were tainted with issues of sexual abuse and off-season misbehaviour, respectively, but Mariota will not cause a PR nightmare.
"He volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club in Eugene, Ore. He graduated early with a degree in general science. He tutored his teammates in high school," said the New York Times.
Friend Taylor Troy told the report that Mariota was focused on succeeding at American football. while Vinnie Passas, his quarterback coach at St. Louis High School, said he was very eager to learn.
[5] The NFL rumors are louder now.
If Mariota would enter the NFL a year earlier, undoubtedly destined for the No.1 pick with the epic numbers he turned up for the Ducks, he would be selling like hot potato among the teams in the lower rungs of the league, Washington Post said, afterwards listing teams that could pursue him.
The report said the Oakland Raiders, currently 2-12, may do good for Mariota since he would not necessarily join the rough and tumble yet, with Derek Carr occupying his post.
The report also mentioned that other teams with 2-12 records are eyeing him — namely, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The New York Jets, not far above them at 3-11, is also a logical candidate.
