The man who was allegedly caught on tape severely beating up an off-duty NYPD officer in Queens over the weekend has been charged with attempted murder.
Off-duty Sergeant Mohammed Deen was beaten to the point of unconsciousness by 29-year-old Hayden Holder outside a Queens diner early Sunday morning.
According to a criminal complaint, the incident occurred after Holder had "a verbal dispute with the victim" inside of a Queens nightclub. Holder then repeatedly punched Deen before "picking the victim's head up and slamming it onto the pavement and shattered glass that is on top of the pavement," reports the Gothamist.
A bystander recorded video of the incident on his cellphone and posted it on Facebook. In the video, the witness can be heard laughing and cheering on the assailant while repeatedly declaring, "That n---a's dead!"
Sergeant Deen is currently in a medically-induced coma at Jamaica Hospital following the assault, which occurred around 5 a.m. as his wife watched helplessly from inside of their BMW.
NYPD Chief of Department Philip Banks III told the New York Daily News that Deen, an 18-year-veteran of Harlem's 32nd Precinct, got into a dispute with Holder outside St. John's Express restaurant in the Ozone Park section of Queens. The conflict between the men may have started at the nearby Maracas nightclub, about a mile away.
However, the complaint does not state how the altercation began, but notes that Deen "suffered multiple facial fractures as well as hemorrhaging on his brain...the victim is currently in a medically induced coma."
Holder is charged with second-degree attempted murder and two counts of felony assault, and was held without bail.
Holder's attorney told CBS that both men were drunk when they began arguing at a nightclub near the diner.
Sources said Holder, who was previously arrested for criminal possession of stolen property, pot possession and graffiti, confessed to the attack but did not know that Deen was a cop at the time.
According to the New York Post, Holder's former neighbors described him as a troublemaker who frequently got into arguments and threatened people.
Video of the attack can be seen below. WARNING: The video is graphic.
