Like many old films made new, Japan is making sure that they will not lose to Hollywood as far as films are concerned. With "Planet of the Apes" and "Jurassic Park" making waves this year, a Japanese studio, Toho, is making sure that they're going to be able to make another epic film about the iconic Godzilla character.
According to MSN, the film will start production in summer 2015 and will be seen in theaters a year later, however, very few details surrounding the film has been announced. However, one thing is for sure, Toho is adamant that the new film will not be connected in any way to the plot of the recent Hollywood blockbuster.
The website noted that the inspiration of getting Godzilla back on the streets is the success of Gareth Edward's 2014 version of the monster film.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Toho has just recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first ever release of the monster film, with special exhibitions, screenings of the classic movies, and even a 15-kilogram statue of the monsters made from pure gold. However, the anniversary film made by Edwards was the one that became a global hit.
Of course, the last Toho Godzilla movie aired ten years ago on "Godzilla: Final Wars," and the studio has already launched what it called the Godzilla Strategic Conference (or Godzi-Con) and has brought to the attention of a committee of studio execs and directors to reboot the brand.
Taichi Ueda will head the project, however, he told the press that unlike the Hollywood version, they won't be spending the lavish amount of $200 million like that of Hollywood.
Ueda said, "The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood," adding that he hopes Godzilla will make waves and will "represent Japan and be loved around the world" by the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Godzilla has appeared in more or less 30 movies in Japanese and Hollywood films, however Japan has not made a new version since 2004's "Godzilla: The Final Wars," which, despite taking advantage of computer graphics, still went on to portray the monster in its traditional rubber suits in several scenes. There is no news on whether or not the same will be done for the 2016 release.
Are you excited to watch a Toho Godzilla again on the big screen?
