There are so many reasons why the undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. does not want to fight Manny Pacquiao but it all boils down to fear, according to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum.
In an interview with local Philippine news channel Interaksyon, Arum said Mayweather is afraid to fight Pacquiao. He added that the American is only making up reasons so that he can avoid the fight from happening though Pacquiao's party is already very much willing to finalize talks.
"The real problem is that Mayweather is so damn smart when it comes to boxing and he realizes that of all the fighters fought and all the fighters out there that Manny poses the biggest threat," Arum told recently in an exclusive interview to worldboxingnews.net. So to get Mayweather in the ring with Pacquiao is a monumental task. Not because of splits, not because of money, because Manny stands the best chance of anybody that Floyd has faced to beat him," Arum explained.
The Top Rank CEO said that Mayweather's reservations started when he saw how fast and powerful Pacquiao fights as a left-handed boxer.
"Manny is fast, Manny can punch and Manny is left-handed. Floyd never wants to fight a left handed fighter because his style is designed to fight orthodox fighters. A left-handed fighter, unless he is slow as molasses, he really has difficulty with. The couple that he has fought, one guy almost cold cocked him years ago. Mayweather retreated to his corner as he is very smart and Manny really poses a big danger for him," he added.
A similar GMA News report said that Arum is confident Pacquiao will dominate Mayweather in case the fight does happens.
"There's always a doubt, but I feel similar to the way Freddie Roach feels - that Manny Pacquiao will decisively beat Floyd Mayweather and may very well knock him out - stop him," he added.
Yahoo Sports discussed that if Mayweather retires and finishes with a perfect record without fighting Pacquiao, "he'll never get fully away from it."
"There will be a significant number of voters who will withhold support from him for the International Boxing Hall of Fame for not facing the best opponent of his era," the report added, noting that there is a big possibility he will be nominated but will have lesser chances if he will avoid Pacquiao.
Reports, however, indicated that this does not worry Mayweather as he is more concerned with the money he can pocket for the fight and the pay-per-view figures.
There have been rumors that he will only agree to fight Manny if it will be a 70/30 split which Arum said was not yet accurate as they have not really discussed details of the fight due to the inability of the other party to at least talk to them.
