Beth Greene's death on the November 30 midseason finale of "The Walking Dead" was indeed heart-wrenching. Main characters dying in AMC's hit zombie drama isn't a new phenomenon, but the demise of Beth (portrayed by Emily Kinney) at the hands of Grady Memorial leader Dawn Lerner left a hole in fans' hearts. In fact, it even spurned an online petition among loyal viewers to bring Beth back from the dead.
Hollywood Life reported that an avid fan, Amanda from Portland, Maine, started a Change.org petition addressed to "The Walking Dead" producer Scott Gimple, and it garnered over 23,000 supporters. She stated reasons about why the beloved character should be back in the show.
"Beth Greene (played by Emily Kinney) was killed off in the mid-season finale in season 5 of The Walking Dead. Her death was far too soon and the writers threw away the potential of a perfectly good character. Her story wasn't over," Amanda wrote.
Beth was first introduced during the show's second season. She previously battled with suicidal tendencies, but she persevered through it and became one of the show's empowered female characters - which the petition pointed out.
"There was so much more to be done with her character and they chose to kill her in a disgusting, unsatifying death that caused more anger and disappointment than shock and mourning," Amanda further explained on the petition. "Beth was a symbol of hope that a lot of women could relate to and see themselves in (especially self-harmers who saw her as someone who overcame their suicidal/depressive feelings)."
Hollywood Life pointed out that bringing Beth back in the show is "not as difficult as one might think." If you remember, Shane briefly came back on the screen "while Rick was hallucinating him as a walker during an attack."
Rick's dead wife, Lori, also returned as another one of his hallucinations. Lori, who died after giving birth to her child Judith, remained silent during her appearances and eventually caused Rick to have a nervous breakdown, Hollywood Life noted.
Not only that, the news outlet also pointed out a flashback scene featuring Hershel--Maggie and Beth's father--inside the prison at the beginning of the show's current season.
The petition also claimed that Beth's death shows that "she was used to further a man's (Daryl's) storyline." Movie Pilot agreed with the statement, saying that "Beth's death will no doubt be a major story arc for Daryl over the remainder of Season 5." Aside from Norman Reedus' Daryl, Beth's sister Maggie may grow from the character's death as well.
"The Walking Dead" returns on February 8, according to AMC. Watch the sneak peek below.
