Mariah Carey botched her performance of her iconic holiday song "All I Want For Christmas Is You" during NBC's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
According to Gawker, the 44-year-old singer "missed most of the high notes she's famous for, leaving her backup singers to pick up the slack." TMZ reports that Carey was supposed to pre-tape her performance on Tuesday, but it was rescheduled as a live rendition on Wednesday after the singer showed up three hours late because of a phone meeting with her divorce attorney.
TMZ adds that when she arrived for the pre-taped number, NBC executives sent her home without filming. But apparently, the network relented and gave Carey the last-minute spot on Wednesday's broadcast, which was held at NYC's Rockefeller Center.
The singer took to Twitter to apologize to her fans for making them wait in the rain for her performance. She wrote, "Last night's situation was beyond my control. I apologize to all that showed up, you know that I would never want to disappoint you."
"You've kept me here, in your hearts, and I keep you in mine always. We are #lambily! #ThereForMe," Carey added.
Sources told E! Online that the pop legend "forced production to stall for hours" because allegedly, she didn't want to perform while the rain was pouring.
"She was concerned about it affecting her voice," an insider explained. "The buzz on set was that Mariah eventually showed up in her car, but refused to get out of the car because of the weather," an insider told the news outlet.
E! Online adds that the songstress "stood up about 15 kids (all under the age of 10)" in her supposed pre-taped performance. The kids, who were supposed to be Carey's background dancers, were all dressed in white and gold holiday outfits and even did two full rehearsals while waiting for the singer.
"The kids were incredibly disappointed when Mariah did not show up on set," E! Online notes.
Deadspin has released isolated and unedited vocals from Carey's live performance at the Rockefeller Center. Watch it here.

Carey and husband Nick Cannon are currently going through a divorce. The ex-couple has three-year-old twins named Moroccan and Monroe. According to Wonderwall.com, Cannon is worried about how the separation will affect their children. However, JustJared reports that Cannon previously confirmed that their family would still celebrate the holidays together despite the looming divorce.
Carey and their children reportedly spent the Thanksgiving holiday at Cannon's Los Angeles home. The singer, however, did not stay over for the night and proceeded to go to a hotel after dinner, TMZ adds.
