The success of "Grand Theft Auto V" among today's most popular consoles is undeniable. First released on Sept. 17, 2013 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the title has grossed over $1 billion in its first three days of sale, wrote Take-Two Interactive.

Its version for the PS4 and Xbox, released on Nov. 18, likewise performed massive -- in the U.K., Independent noted that the title is the best-selling video game ever, with most sales garnered by the PS4 (58%) at the time of reporting.

The feat accomplished by the franchise may have brought some pressure to developer Rockstar, if current speculations are to be believed. According to The REM, "GTA" developers are reportedly divided in deciding which sequel would be most appropriate following "GTA V."

Allegedly, the top senior management is confused in taking one of two major proposed sides: One that calls for a straight "GTA VI" sequel and another that pushes for "GTA: San Andreas 2." A third faction has also been cited -- that which aims for a "Vice City" repackage.

The REM noted insiders claiming that "GTA: San Andreas 2" launches in 2017. This is the sequel to "GTA: San Andreas," which came out Oct. 26, 2004 -- more than a decade from the past.

Accordingly, separate teams will be working (1) for the new game and (2) improvements on "GTA V," which comes out to PC on Jan. 2015.

This buzz follows our previous report, which cited rumors hinting that "GTA VI" takes on a 1970s vibe -- the setting of which remains uncertain at present. Suggested areas were Vice City (Miami-equivalent), Liberty City (New York-equivalent), Paris, London, Brazil and sin city Las Vegas.

Motoringcrunch said some fans picked London as the most suitable place, if ever the 70s claim comes true. Obviously, Rockstar has not confirmed decision on this matter yet.

In an earlier dialogue, Rockstar North studio president Leslie Benzies confirmed over Develop, "We've got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don't know what 'GTA VI' will be, but we've got some ideas."

Benzies told Digital Trends about Vice City, "Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas. In that context re-imagining Vice City would be very interesting."

As we have earlier reported, "GTA VI" has been assumed to launch either in 2017 or within 2018 - 2020. The sequel is expected to feature a female protagonist.

Which edition would you like to succeed "Grand Theft Auto V?" We'd love to hear your choices, so cast your votes in the poll below. Anticipated "GTA VI" settings clip (via Gtchy1230) follow.
