The midseason finale of "The Walking Dead" ended on a sad note. One of the main characters, Beth Greene, died horribly at the hands of Grady Memorial Hospital leader Dawn Lerner. But aside from Beth's untimely demise, there are also moments in the episode titled "Coda" that resonated among the viewers of the popular AMC show.

One of those key moments was Rick shooting Bob fatally and then saying, "Shut up." The scene seemed a bit out of order for some viewers, but Andrew Lincoln, the actor who portrays Rick Grimes, has an explanation.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln said that the fans' reaction was also exactly the same reaction he had when he first read the script for that episode.

"The 'shut up' thing was really interesting because the way I justified it was when I echo Gareth by saying 'Can't go back, Bob' - I think that part of it was him going 'shut up' to Gareth. Because otherwise, really? I'm saying 'shut up' after I shot the guy? Which really made me laugh," Lincoln told Entertainment Weekly. "So that's the way I justified it, is that it was to Gareth. It was extraordinary shooting that scene."

Gareth, played by actor Andrew J. West, was murdered by Rick earlier in the show's current season.

Lincoln also revealed in the Entertainment Weekly interview that he really wanted his character to kill Bob during the earlier episodes. But showrunner Scott M. Gimple said that at that time, it shouldn't happen yet in order to stop Rick from losing his moral compass. Lincoln also revealed that Daryl is Rick's emotional tether, as well as his friends and family.

"I was furious and I wanted to take on more people. I wanted to provoke. That's the way I wanted it. I wasn't done with the situation and I was so hurting that I wanted to vent," Lincoln told the news outlet, referring to the hospital showdown scene between Rick's group and Dawn's.

When asked how he felt about the tragic death of Beth (played by Emily Kinney) in the midseason finale, the actor said that it was a hard time not just for him, but also to the other cast members of the show.

"That was such a body blow. I really didn't see it coming. I had absolutely no idea and I think everyone was reeling from that one," Lincoln said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "Emily is such a beloved person on set and such an incredible actress. The whole experience of shooting it was, as always, painful. And also you do feel robbed as well because I did not get enough time with her," the actor added.

"The Walking Dead" returns on February 8, according to AMC.
