Four days after Ohio State defensive tackle Kosta Karageorge was reported missing by his family, his lifeless body was found near his apartment in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday.

Columbus police said that they found Karageorge in a dumpster with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ESPN reported. He was reportedly identified through his tattoos.

According to the ESPN report, Sgt. Rich Weiner said that the investigation on the case is still ongoing and that the body of the player has already been to the county morgue.

"At this time, there's a lot of questions that we're still trying to work out. But he was found inside of the dumpster, the handgun was found inside of the dumpster with him. At this time we are able to confirm through tattoos here at the scene that it is the body of Kosta Karageorge," Weiner was quoted as saying.

ESPN added that a police report noted that the fatality's mother claimed that Karageorge had "concussions and spells of confusion." She also added that her son sent her a text message, apologizing if he caused "embarassment" to the family.

"The Ohio State University Department of Athletics was shocked and saddened to learn today of the death of student-athlete Kosta Karageorge, a senior from Columbus. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Karageorge family, and those who knew him, during this most difficult time," the school's statement read.

In a similar report, Yahoo Sports wrote that Karageorge was a "walk-on" for the Ohio State football team and he is also involved in wrestling. To honor the memory of the player, Ohio State spent a moment of silence for him on Saturday with a poster of him displayed on the scoreboard of the Ohio Stadium. Coach Urban Meyer said during the game that the player's disappearance is still "unbelievable" for them.

"All you can do is grab a knee and play hard. I know there's a lot of prayers on the team because a lot of the guys are friends with Kosta. He was only with us since August, so I didn't know him that well but talked to his mom a few times. Just come home safe, man," Meyer added, as quoted by Yahoo Sports.

His teammates also mourned his passing, saying he is a great person and has been a big help for the team.

"I mean, I was friends with Kosta before he even joined the team. He's a great guy, and just for something like that to happen, it's obviously a shame. Coming from the wrestling team and coming to help us, you just really hope a guy like that is safe. Stuff like that is a lot bigger than football," said teammate Taylor Decker after the game via ABC News.
