Motorola's Moto X handset may be one of the first non-Nexus handsets to run Android 4.4 KitKat if the Google-owned manufacturer can keep its current pace. According to lucky Verizon users, Motorola has released a soak test for a new firmware, and it's Android 4.4 KitKat.

A soak test is essentially a soft release, where Motorola and/or the carrier send out a new firmware patch to a select few devices in order to get a better grasp on what problems might be lurking in the code. Soak tests usually happen anywhere from days to a couple weeks before the official rollout, so if everything goes smoothly for Verizon Moto X owners, KitKat could actually land on the handset sometime during November.

It's unclear whether the time frame applies to non-Verizon variants of the Moto X. Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside announced Nov. 13 that the Moto X handset would receive Android 4.4 KitKat "in a matter of weeks." Looks like Motorola may be able to keep its promise.

Android 4.4 KitKat will bring a ton of new features that will mesh well with the Moto X's hands-free mentality. Google has changed the overall aesthetic of the Android operating system, opting for more vibrant colors and space, much like Apple's iOS 7. The real game changer, however, is how much Google has integrated Google Now into the new interface. In Android 4.4 KitKat, Google Now lurks underneath many phone functions, including the dialer. Add in more voice commands than ever, and KitKat should blend seamlessly into the Moto X lifestyle.
