Michael Phelps' self-proclaimed girlfriend was named David Roy Fitch at birth.

Revealing that he and Phelps were together the night he was arrested for driving under the influence, the girlfriend, now known as Taylor Lianne Chandler, admitted on Nov. 13 through Facebook that she was born ascribed to the male sex, the Daily Mail reported.

"A lot of you had problems with the photos of me that came out," she said. "I knew that if him and I were photographed or seen together the media would want to know who I am."

She added: "To him I said it was because I grew up with a famous father. The truth is ... I was born intersex and named David Roy Fitch at birth."

'Born a man' vs 'Born Intersex'

A blog published on the Huffington Post opined that the media have misled the public in saying that she was "born a man." She "came out as intersex", the author of the blog maintained.

In a later post, she explained the condition as " a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn't seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male," per the Intersex Society of North America. 

"I was born with male genitalia with no testicles, but I also have a uterus and no ovaries," she explained to Radar Online.   

In the earlier Facebook revelation, she admitted to using testosterone blockers and estrogen enhancers in her teen years, and that her birth certificate was modified then, changing her name to Paige Victoria Whitney, before corrective surgery in 1993.

After a surgery, she named herself Taylor Lianne Whitney "to escape back into anonymity and have a normal life," alluding to encounters with the law. She had made friends, went out on dates and got married without revealing her past to them.

She said she finally decided to reveal her back story to the most decorated Olympian — packing 22 medals — after threats from the media. "I will probably lose him, which hurts like hell," she said.

Smitten with Phelps

The revelation shoves aside the 12-year age gap between Phelps, 29, and Chandler, 41, said Radar Online, who came out with an exclusive interview with her.

She and Phelps reportedly first met on Tinder in August and dated on Sept. 21, watching a Baltimore Ravens game in the athlete's home.

The Daily Mail noted that Chandler's public account on Facebook seemed like "a shrine to the swimmer," who is still serving a six-month suspension from swimming because of DUI.

The page also carried links to news articles on their relationship, all of which have not gotten a response from Phelps yet. Comments go from inspiration — "really a shame that you would have to explain anything..its nobodys business...stay strong" — to exasperation — "lol. poor mike omg."
