The rumor mills have all been taking an aim at iPhone 7, the so-called flagship successor to the recently released iPhone 6. While the idea of a new iPhone number sounds exciting, it appears speculations have overlooked the possibility of an iPhone 6S. Sure Apple has established its very first phablet in the form of iPhone 6 Plus, but what about an -s iPhone? Is the Cupertino giant ditching the idea once and for all?
We can never really tell, unless Apple confirms it. Still, the possibility remains that the iPhone 6S can adopt changes based on specs improved by 5S from 5. From a parallel perspective, the 6S doesn't have to be necessarily bigger -- leave that uniqueness to 6 Plus and 6S might actually morph into a device anyone has never seen before.
We've also taken the initiative to compare the possible specs and features of the iPhone 6S against Samsung's already-existing Galaxy S5. But first, let's take a look at the odds surrounding the former.
iPhone 6S
According to Macworld, there isn't much difference between the designs of the iPhones 5 and 5S; only that the latter sported a Gold-colored variant and that its Black version has been referred to as Space Grey. If this applies to the iPhone 6S, the device may add another color option from the iPhone 6's current offerings of Gold, Silver and Space Gray.
The incorporation of Touch ID fingerprint system in the 5s is another noteworthy upgrade. It is almost certain that the 6S might sport the feature, as it is present in both iPhones 6 and 6 Plus.
A major difference between the iPhone 5 and 5S is the processor. The former is powered by an A6 chip, while the latter is packed with an A7 chip in 64-bit architecture. The iPhone 6 runs an A8 chip, also built in 64-bit; can the 6S jump to an A9 processor this time?
TechRadar has written desirable features to look forward to in the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7. According to the source, a smaller screen size similar to that of the 5S would be ideal, since bigger panels can sometimes be counterproductive -- specially when the user's hands are small.
The outlet added that Apple's new devices may want to incorporate wireless charging. Perhaps iPhone 6 users already wanted this in the past that some of them reportedly took a hoax ad seriously, believing that the latest handset may be charged well off inside a steaming microwave oven.
Ditching 16GB storage option could be a good idea, said TechRadar. The outlet suggested having the iPhone 6S start at 32GB and the iPhone 7 at 64GB.
Rounding up what we have, it appears the iPhone 6S may retain the current-gen's design but pack changes in terms of specs and features.
iPhone 6S Versus Galaxy S5 (iPhone 6S specs from GSMArena)
Camera
The S5's rear facing camera captures 16MP. If the 6S won't be much of a change, it may sport an 8MP rear snapper with the inclusion of Focus Pixels and other features. Heavy said it would be nice to see swappable lenses and an increase in the latter's megapixels.
Display
The S5 boasts a stunning 5.1-inch FHD Super AMOLED display (1920 x 1080), at 432 ppi. In Macworld's report, iPhones 5 and 5S didn't have much difference in terms of display, so we're rooting for the same thing in iPhone 6S. Hence, the model may sport a 4.7 inch LED-backlit IPS LCD (750 x 1334) at 326 ppi.
Heavy noted that rumors speaking of holographic projections may have to wait until another company does the technology first. Expectedly, Apple will follow.
Operating System
The Galaxy S5 runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat, although it is reportedly getting the new Android 5.0 Lollipop. Meanwhile, the iPhone 6S is likely to operate under an iOS 8 update or the iOS 9 (if the device comes out Sept. 2015).
Dimension
The S5 takes on the following dimension: 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm weighing 145g. Again, if the 6S follows its predecessor's structure, it'll measure 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm and weigh 129g. Heavy said Apple may actually turn its "Bendgate" peeve into perk by finally adopting a flexible frame.
Battery
The Galaxy S5 is powered by a 2800 mAh battery; the iPhone 6 has a non-removable Li-Po 1810 mAh battery. The iPhone 6S' battery is uncertain at this point, since such spec is affected by OS, among other factors.
But Heavy reported the idea that the next iPhone may arrive with solar cells enabling wireless charging -- as the name implies, all you need is the sun. Could the iPhone 6S finally get some tanning?
Stabley Times reported that the iPhone 6S might arrive next year.
Note that Apple has not confirmed any information about the iPhone 6S yet.
