Formula One racing champion Michael Schumacher is out of coma, his doctor has confirmed, but that does not mean that the seven-time world title holder will be back on the track anytime soon.

Dr. Jean-Francois Payen, the physician who treated Schumacher in Grenoble, France, after his skiing accident in the Swiss Alps, told the Telegraph that although the champion is showing some progress, he is still on a long journey to recovery.

"I have seen some progress but I would say give him time," Payen said. "It's like other patients, we are in a timescale that ranges from one year to three years, so it takes patience."

Payen said he is in close touch with the family of the 45-year-old F1 legend, who was moved from Grenoble to Lausanne in June and has since returned home to his family to recuperate.

A team of 15 nurses, caregivers and physiologists were helping Schumacher recover. Following the accident, he spent six months in a medically-induced coma, the Mirror UK said.

"He's in very favorable conditions. This plays a big role. The family environment is anyway best for the patient," Payen, who heads the anaesthesiology department at Grenoble University Hospital where Schumacher was rushed in December last year, reportedly said.

On the other hand, Dr. Gary Hartstein who worked previously for the F1 said that the family's silence about the true condition of Schumacher means the racing legend's "long goodbye."

On the 20th anniversary of his first F1 world title on Nov. 13, Schumacher's family -- his wife Corinna, 45, and children Mick, 15, and Gina-Marie, 17 -- relaunched their head of the family's website with words of thanks.

"Still we receive wishes for Michael to get well soon every day, and still we are stunned by the sheer amount of sympathies. We can only say thank you for facing this fight with him and us together. We remain confident and hope for the best for Michael," the message read.

The website, which was put down following the accident, did not bring up anything related to Schumacher's accident and instead celebrated his feats on his racing career.

According to the Mirror UK, in his 307 Grand Prix starts, Schumacher won 91 races - a figure unmatched by any driver who went before or has arrived since.

F1 superstar Alain Prost who ranks second managed to take home 51 victories, while Aytron Senna, considered the sport's greatest driver, has 50 less wins at third. The winner of the last World Championships, Sebastian Vittel, ranks fourth with 39 wins.

The website also showed that Schumacher bested out his contemporaries in the number of world titles (seven), laps in lead (5114), pole positions (68), podium positions (155) and fastest laps (77).

Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, told the Telegraph that he hoped the relaunched website would "give the many fans from all over the world, whose sympathy is still unbroken after his accident, a home."
