With "Dumb and Dumber To" gaining more and more traction these days, one would assume hefty pay for the lead actors. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the Farrelly brothers revealed such wasn't the case in the original "Dumb and Dumber" -- at least for Jeff Daniels.
According to Bobby Farrelly, Jeff Daniels was offered a $50,000 to play Harry Dunne -- a meager amount compared to Jim Carrey's $7 million salary for his Lloyd Christmas portrayal.
"Jeff Daniels was not the obvious choice because he hadn't done any, you know, out and out comedies before that. He was always comedic in his roles. But we were huge fans of his and Pete in particular loved him in ['Something Wild']," Bobby Farrelly said during the interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Bobby Farrelly dished that Daniels also "elevated" Carrey. "...we fought for him, and then when Jim read with him, they read together, Jim realized that he was pushing, Jeff was pushing him in places that no other actors were pushing him," he said in the THR interview.
"He's a genius at doing that. And Jim understood. He was elevating him so he fought for him," he added.
But it seems that even having the Farrelly brothers and Carrey as back-up isn't enough as the studio wanted Daniels off "Dumb and Dumber."
"...they said, "Please, anyone but him. Get a comedic actor." So they offered him, if I recall, 50 grand, which was, you know, Jim's getting seven mil, they offered him 50 figuring he'll say, "No, I'm not taking that", but he took it..." revealed Bobby Farrelly.
On the other hand, Carrey's $7 million salary was initially $350,000 -- had he not declined the offer.
"He wanted like 400,000. And they held off. And then Ace Ventura came out, which was his first movie and it was number one," Peter Farrelly shared during the THR interview. To make things short, Carrey's $400,000 asking price simply snow-balled to $7 million -- getting him "the most ever for any comedic actor," said Peter.
The 1994 comedy film opened to $16 million, Business Insider noted. "The movie held the number one spot at the box office for four weeks and went on to make over $257 million worldwide on an estimated $17 million budget," said the report.
This year's "Dumb and Dumber 2" "is expected to pick up $32 million in 3,152 locations," reported Variety. The sequel film is reportedly a $40 million production, the same report added.
"Dumb and Dumber To" hits theaters this weekend on Nov. 14 and will star the same lead actors -- Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne.
"Harry is in need of a kidney transplant, and the only person who can help him is the daughter he never knew he had with Fraida Felcher (Kathleen Turner)," Cinema Blend says of the plot.
"Unfortunately, their journey leads them to cross paths with his daughter's adopted mother (Laurie Holden) and her lover (Rob Riggle), who plan to use Harry and Lloyd in their own nefarious plot," added Cinema Blend.
