The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said that McDonald's is recalling a Hello Kitty toy in Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals over choking risk.
"Components inside of the whistle can detach, posing choking and aspiration hazards to young children," the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said in the recall news.
There have been two incidents of injuries related to the Hello Kitty Happy Meal toy. Two children reportedly "coughed out pieces of the whistle that they had sucked into their mouths," the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said. One of the two received medical attention, it added.
The toy, a Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop Whistle, is a plastic character figurine which holds up a heart-shaped lollipop. It "measures about 3 inches in height and width and 1 3/4 inches in depth," detailed the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
"The whistle can be removed and used to make sounds by inhaling or exhaling through the mouthpiece," it added. The detachable whistle "measures about 1 3/4 inches in height and width and 3/4 inches in depth."
The toys were exclusively distributed by McDonald's restaurants from Oct. 31, 2014 to the first week of November 2014 as part of Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals.
"No other designs in the current Hello Kitty and Max Steel promotions are involved in this voluntary recall, nor are toys affected from previous Hello Kitty promotions," said McDonald's. "Additionally, this recall has no impact on other Happy Meal products and programs distributed in other markets outside the U.S. and Canada."
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission noted that the recall affects about 2.3 million toys in the United States while 200,000 Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop Whistle units were distributed in Canada.
McDonald's cleared that most of the toys were not sent to restaurants. "Of the amount produced, to date we have recovered approximately 70% or 1.6 million of the whistles," the restaurant added.
Parents and guardians are advised to immediately retrieve the whistle from children. The removable part should be returned to any McDonald's restaurant for replacement.
The Hello Kitty figurine, on the other hand, is reportedly safe to keep, according to McDonald's.
The fast food chain is to offer "a free replacement toy and either a yogurt tube or a bag of apple slices," noted the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
McDonald's clears that it has tested the Hello Kitty toy, saying on its website:
"McDonald's safety standards are among the highest in the industry, and we have a strong track record of toy safety. The toy was evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory, accredited by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), and the toy was determined to be in compliance with all applicable federal and state requirements."
