The alleged 12.2-inch Apple tablet will reportedly be replacing the smaller iPad minis -- which means that the current generation device could be the last miniature tab.

According to MacRumors, Taiwan's Economic Daily News claims there won't be a new 7.9-inch Apple tablet rolling out next year or the following years, so to speak.

"A preference towards larger screen sizes, the introduction of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, declining iPad sales, and 'fierce competition' in the tablet market are said to have led to Apple's alleged decision to discontinue the tablet," reported MacRumors.

More likely, the larger tablet referred to by Economic Daily News is the alleged upcoming iPad Pro which didn't make it to this year's launch of new Apple devices.

KnowYourMobile noted that KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts a 2015 launch for the large Apple tablet. "We believe Apple plans to launch upgraded iPad Air early this year, and will accelerate development of 12.9" iPad," the report quoted Kuo.

"As such, more resources will be allocated to these two products, which will affect the progress of the development of new iPad mini," he added in the report.

"All told, we think chances of the debut of a new iPad mini in 2H14 are slim. In addition, the 12.9" iPad is unlikely to be offered in 2014. For these reasons, we predict the only new iPad product in 2H14 will be the upgraded iPad Air," KnowYourMobile quoted Kuo as saying.

The iPad Pro is rumored to have a display measuring somewhere between 12.2 and 12.9 inches, MacRumors noted. In an earlier report, Bloomberg said that "according to people with knowledge of the matter," the screen size is 12.9 inches diagonally.

The alleged upcoming Apple tablet was previously rumored to be powered by "Apple-built next-generation 'A8' processor" which supposedly launched fall of this year, as reported by Apple Insider. However, given that no iPad Pro materialized at the Apple event -- contrary to previously predicted - it isn't clear what lies under the hood for the large tablet.

It could come with an A8X processor, just like the iPad Air 2, said Christian Today in a report. The alleged 2015 release date is too far away from now and we doubt that Apple won't come up with a newer, upgraded processor for its devices by that time.

MacRumors said that the iPad Pro could be "slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2, coming in at around 7mm, and it may have stereo speakers and an ultra high-definition display."
