NBA legend Allen Iverson kept it real when he met with the Philippine press last Tuesday, social media news network Rappler reported.
But while he still managed to retain his character even after his professional basketball career, he shattered his fans' expectations of seeing him take the court again, when he officially dispelled the prospects of him joining the Philippine Basketball Association.
"All of the passion that you saw from me throughout my career, it's gone," Iverson told the media in the press conference. "I honestly miss the game, I love watching the game. I can't watch the [Philadephia] Sixers play because I get emotional watching them because of all them memories and knowing that I can't help. In this stage of my life, I don't want it no more. I don't want anything that comes with it."
The Rappler article reported that the 39-year-old retired professional basketball player and eleven-time NBA All-Star was in the Philippines to attend a charity basketball event "All In" at the Mall of Asia Arena. The event features NBA veterans Eddy Curry and Dermarr Johnson and members of the Ball Up team, all playing for the benefit of Gawad Kalinga, a Philippine-based organization specializing in providing houses for the poor and disaster victims.
But Iverson's appearance will only be limited to coaching and nothing more. In a GMA News Online article, prominent agent Sheryl Reyes revealed that no less than seven teams offered Iverson to play for the PBA up until two years ago.
Why is it impossible? Here's why: Iverson frankly told the Philippine media, GMA News Online reported, that he didn't want to play anymore after his last professional game in 2010.
Iverson reportedly said in the press conference that he wants to focus on his family after 17 years of travelling and playing in the NBA.
"I love just being a full-time dad, being with my kids. I lost a lot of time with my two older kids," he said.
Another reason is that local teams do not have the power to house the MVP. Online news portal Interaksyon quoted Reyes, saying that PBA imports are paid a maximum of $20,000 a month, based on uniform league contracts. Interaksyon reported that Iverson signed a deal worth four million dollars for two years during his stint in Turkey.
In his 14-season career in the NBA, Iverson has played for four different teams, namely: Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. According to Interkasyon, Iverson made a short comeback in 2010 for the 76ers but he left the team for personal reasons. He then brought his talents to Turkey in the same year. Iverson officially announced his retirement in 2013.
