WNBA's Brittney Griner sustained a cut on her elbow after a knife-wielding man attacked her and two of her teammates on Monday in Shenyang, China.
The Phoenix Mercury center, according to an ESPN report, was not taken to a hospital but her wound was immediately attended to by a medical team on the scene. Reports said that Griner and two other teammates were walking towards the team bus from their practice arena when a man armed with a knife suddenly appeared.
The man then became very violent, shouting while swinging his weapon as he chased the three women towards the bus. ESPN said that he was able to catch up with Griner and stabbed her on the elbow.
Investigator Lindsay Kagawa Colas told ESPN that Griner was lucky she was wearing a winter coat which prevented the knife from cutting through her skin. After the attack, the police said that Griner and some players were trapped inside the bus together with the troubled man but he later on volunteered to exit the vehicle minutes after. He was caught by authorities still covered with blood.
Colas also mentioned in a USA Today report that what happened was just a random incident and that there was no indication that Griner or her two companions were the outright targets.
Griner said that she feels lucky that she was not really harmed after the incident.
"I was thinking I was going to end up stabbed in China and if he got to us at the back of the bus, I was going to have to fight this man with a knife. The guy was clearly either mentally ill or very drunk. He was yelling about us hitting his wife and it was pretty clear he had no idea who we were," she was quoted by ESPN as saying.
On her Instagram account, she also a posted a video after the violent incident and it came with this caption: ""First let me say I'm ok!!!! But last night me and 3 my teammates got chase and attack by a man with a big ass knife got a little scratch and my teammates walk away unharmed! He chase us into our bus and had us corned yelling at us then he finally left! Ugh lets just say I'm ready to get out this city we are visiting! Life can be took at any moment! Cherish every moment! AGAIN IM OK! Thank you to everyone that has been checking on me!"

It was noted by ESPN that Griner and her team were in China for a road game against Liaoning Hengye. The center has been recently recognized as WNBA's defensive player last season, leading Phoenix to win the title. She also grabbed the attention of the whole world when she proposed to her girlfriend and fellow NBA player Glory Johnson earlier this year.
