Green Bay Packers' coach Mike McCarthy recently inked a "multiyear" contract extension with the team and this deal earned him the media spotlight though questions arose if he is really still the best man to coach the Packers.
Fox Sports said that McCarthy is already in his ninth season as head coach of the Packers and he has led the team to more than 90 wins in his whole career. With this kind of record, McCarthy is on his way to making history and becoming one of the best coaches for the team.
The coach told Fox Sports that he considers winning 100 games in the league as a "milestone."
"I'm not going to compare myself to Coach [Vince] Lombardi. Let's be real here. I understand my place, my opportunity and I'm very thankful for the people that came before me: Coach Lombardi, Curly Lambeau, Mike Holmgren, Ron Wolf, they made this place, the foundation of the building.
"(General manager) Ted Thompson, (team president) Mark Murphy and my responsibility and Aaron Rodgers and the players' responsibility is to make sure we leave it better than when we arrived. That's the way I've always viewed it. I said it in my opening press conference," he added.
McCarthy's first week as head coach in 2006 was a struggle for him but comparing it to the status of the Packers now, the head coach said he has become "more experienced" as a coach.
"I think when you're younger, you have an idea of what you want to do and how you want to do it, and then you realize you have a lot more to learn than you want to admit. I think it makes you listen more, and I think it makes you check yourself," he told Fox Sports.
In a similar report by ESPN, Thompson, who also had a contract extension in July, said that they are happy with their extended working relationship with their current head coach.
"Over the past nine years, he's provided great stability and consistency to the Packers organization and our community as an excellent coach and leader. He's a good man and we look forward to the future with Mike as our head coach," he added.
ESPN noted that McCarthy is an effective coach with a record of 93-53-1 in his entire career. Currently, the team is one game behind the Detroit Lions but they are not far from winning their fourth consecutive title.
And with McCarthy sticking longer on the team, team players and executives have an assurance that he will continue working his winning formula for the Packers and not frustrate the people who believed in him especially the executives who decided on his contract extension.
