‘The View’ Cast to Get Younger 5th Co-Host? Rosie O’Donnell Furious [Rumors]
The show's plummeting views reportedly prompted showrunners to consider a new, younger host for "The View" and Rosie O'Donnell isn't happy. A fifth co-host isn't the only thing ticking her off though.
According to Radar Online, O'Donnell threw a fit off the air over a "Must-Have Flash Sale" segment on "The View." For the segment, the co-hosts are to feature an item with a "time-sensitive, temporary discount" on Monday, Whoopi Goldberg said on air.
O'Donnell replied, "I didn't know we were doing that. That makes us like the home shopping club, what is that?" as quoted by Mail Online.
"It's something that allows us to keep changing our set," Goldberg replied.
O'Donnell said, "'I didn't enjoy those, but maybe it's just me. Keep going."
Mail Online's source that although O'Donnell kept her cool on air, she went "ballistic" during the production meeting held after.
"Why didn't someone tell me about this segment? Who in the hell approved that concept?
"I hated it on the previous version of the show. I won't stand for this crap."
When told that it was to attract much younger viewers, O'Donnell reportedly replied per Mail Online:
"Don't give me that bull***t. Stop trying to change this show to get younger viewers. This is not what I signed up for."
The Hollywood Reporter said that "The View" has lost its sky-high ratings during its September premiere. The outlet said views for that debut episode topped all other episodes of the show in the past 8 years.
"The View", hosted by O'Donnell, Goldberg, Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace, "recently averaged a competitive 2.8 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in women 25-to-54," said The Hollywood Reporter.
The gossip site adds:
"But its showing in the key demo is pacing downward for the fourth straight season and is 30 percent south of where it was five years ago. It doesn't help that The View's advantage over CBS' The Talk is now is negligible."
According to Mail Online, "The View" is clearly losing it out to other shows when it comes to the 18-34 demographic. "Currently, The View is being crushed in the 18-to-34 demo group by both The Wendy Williams Show (in first place) and new talk show The Real (in second)," said the outlet.
A source told Mail Online:
"ABC is really concerned about how poorly The View is performing with younger audiences. They never thought The Real would beat them out in key demographics and now they have to do something to make the show more youthful, which is hard when the average age of your co-host is 50."
