'Friends' Reunion Show 2014 Confirmed? No, But Original Series Coming to Netflix
While we keep our fingers crossed for a "Friends" reunion, Netflix has done all of us a favor by securing a license from Warner Bros. to exclusively stream all 10 seasons of the much-loved sitcom.
As a New Year's gift to all "Friends" fans, E! News reported that the popular NBC comedy will make its Netflix debut on Jan. 1, 2015. During this time, all 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, will be made available.
Netflix will be airing all 236 episodes "including the 'lost' episodes where Joey and Rachel become a thing," noted TV Line.
However, for those living outside of the US and Canada, Engadget revealed that upon release, the "Friends" episodes will only be available in the two previously mentioned countries. There is no word if changes will be made to include more countries at a later time.
2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the show, which aired its first episode on Thursday, Sept. 22, 1994. The comedy series ended in 2004 but retains a massive following.
"Friends" is an American TV sitcom that features the life of six friends -- Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Joey and Phoebe -- as they went through the ups and downs of life in Manhattan, often finding comfort and laughter within their circle of friends. The show is credited for having launched the careers of Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc.
It quickly became one of the most-loved television series globally and during its final season, the cast earned a whopping $ 1 million per actor per episode.
As a fan favorite, Matt LeBlanc was featured in a series spin-off titled, "Joey." It centered on Joey's big move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. While being heavily promoted and taking on the timeslot of "Friends," over time viewership continued to fall and was eventually dropped after only two seasons.
To commemorate the show's 20th anniversary, " A pop-up replica of the series' signature Central Perk coffee shop has been serving free cups of Eight O' Clock Coffee in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood since September 17 through Saturday, and some of the cast hit Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show to reprise their roles, if only for a night," reported Deadline.
As if legal streaming of "Friends" isn't enough, as an added treat, to mark the announcement, Netflix put out the video below of The Rembrandts singing the show's theme song at the Central Perk shop in New York City with a special cameo from James Michael Tyler (Gunther).
Start your New Year right and head over to Netflix for some "Friends" episodes.
