Heat vs Cavs: Score, Highlights & Replay
LeBron James faced his former Miami Heat teammates at a preseason match in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 11. Before the game started, James shook hands with the Heat players. He said during the practices in Brazil that there were no hard feelings between them.
The HSBC Arena in Brazil was sold out with a crowd of 15,411. Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra was pleased with the success of their international presence, quoted by ESPN as saying:
"Who knows where this league will be 20, 25 years from now. In the last six years since I've been the head coach, we've been to England, France, China and Rio with tremendous experiences. Whether or not that happens on a regular basis -- in the regular season -- I don't know."
According to ESPN, LeBron played only for 20 minutes and scored seven points and eight assists. He obviously struggled during the first half and finished with 2-of-7 shooting from the field and 3-of-7 from the free throw line. Kevin Love led the Cleveland Cavaliers in scoring 25 points and seven rebounds.
Although LeBron was the main NBA superstar to watch, Brazilian Anderson Varejao had the loudest applause from fans. Varejao moved abroad to play professional basketball when he was only 19 years old.
He said on an on-court microphone as quoted by ESPN, "I've been waiting my entire life for this. I hope you enjoy it." Varejao made the first successful shot in the game for the Cavs and left the first quarter with eight points.
Kyrie Irving was out due to a sprained right ankle but the Cavs' bench was playing excellently. Cavs led by as much as 18 points during the second half but Miami rallied to outscore Cleveland in the fourth quarter 31-21, getting a lot of help from rookie Shabazz Napier.
With only seconds left on the clock, the game was tied at 105 after Napier shot a couple of free throws. Bleacher Report wrote that A.J. Price was on a shooting spree from the three-point line, hitting three of four in overtime.
Ultimately, Cavaliers broke away by three points to win the game 122-119.
For the Cavs, Love shot nine out of 12 from the field, with four of five from the three-point arc. Tristan Thompson had 18 points and nine rebounds, Dion Waiters had 16 points, Varejao had 14 points, A.J. Price had 12 and Joe Harris had 11.
