Tesla Model D News & Release Date: 691hp, Dual Motor, Automatic Lane Changing
As the innovative futuristic technology of movies like "Minority Report" and "iRobot" slowly catches up to the present day, Tesla is moving one step closer to creating a car that will simply drive for it's user. While the technology is not there yet, the new Tesla Model D incorporates some early shifts towards a fully automated car. Tesla's big reveal event was held Thursday night where stockholders and curious buyers lined up to hear the news.
The Tesla Model D is a complete upgrade from previous models, which didn't pack the punch that American's have become so accustom to. Tesla's use of the letter "D" stands for duel, which represents the duel electric motors located in the front and back of the car. The motors are able to send power back and forth without having the strain of one motor powering the entire car.
"Acceleration is a bit faster," said Tesla CEO, Elon Musk. The Model D has been clocked with zero to sixty miles an hour in 3.2 seconds.
The Model D has a higher top speed as well as three settings that control the power distribution. On paper this machine looks like a complete beast with 691 HP, all wheel drive and twin electric motors.
"Two drive units where we can shift the power and constantly be at the optimal efficiency for each motor means we can overcome the extra mass," he said. "Everything improves about the car with dual motors. It is like having your own personal roller coaster you can use at any time."
The idea of a "personal roller coaster" is something that American buyers will love to hear. Aside from the personal coaster, users will also enjoy a personal parker and possible lane changer as well. While there is a setting which allows one to override this function, we can only imagine how a driver wouldn't initially trust a car to make these sorts of decisions at high speeds.
If trust is your issue, then the Model D will show what it can do by parking itself in the garage. Yes, this car can park itself. To add to the magic, by using a GPS system the car will also back itself out of the driveway and turn on the AC, all in preparation for your arrival. It's safe to say that this is not your average electric car. Tesla's website is currently "offline for maintenance," but stay tuned for details on availability and pricing.
