'Minecraft' PS4 & Xbox One Release Date & Price Comparison: Movie in the Works?
"Minecraft" creator Markus "Notch" Persson announced that he wanted to be the "leak" announcing the game's arrival into the big screen.
Earlier this year, the 34-year-old Mojang Studio developer said on Twitter, "Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie. I wanted to be the leak!"
Though seemingly joking, Persson confirmed via Polygon that it is all true saying, "It's for real. I think every part of that tweet was real, including me wanting to be the one to spill the news about a potential movie."
Now, rumors are saying that the million-selling game's film franchise is slated for a 2017 or 2018 release, according to Mojang's Chief Operating Officer Vu Bui. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Bui announced that the project is still in its early stages of development.
He told the outlet, "I still have no idea. A long time. I'm going to guess three years, but it could be four, probably not two. 3-4 years seems to be a reasonable bet."
The upcoming movie potentially follows the footsteps of the highly-successful "The Lego Movie." Deadline reported back in February that "The Lego Movie" producer Roy Lee, together with Jill Messick of "Mean Girls," will be producing "Minecraft."
When asked why Mojang has partnered with Warner Brothers, Bui responded that it all boiled down to respect. "They respect the brand, respect the IP, and want to make something that is going to be awesome, not just capitalise on the success of the game."
Bui noted that they were approached by many studios in attempts of teaming up for the said franchise. He added that the upcoming film is a large-budget movie.
Previously, we have reported that Mojang was rumored to be bought by Microsoft. This actually came true later on. According to GameSpot, the software giant acquired Mojang and "Minecraft" in a deal amounting $2.5 billion. The outlet added that Persson, along with other two founders, will be exiting the Swedish studio when the deal closes.
Breathecast wrote that the digital version of "Minecraft" was first released on Aug.14 for the PS4, while the Xbox One got it the next day. As for the disc version-retailer copy, "Minecraft" came to PS4 on Oct. 3. Xbox One will acquire the game later on Nov. 18.
Prices have a one-dollar difference. The PS4 version will cost a little cheaper at $18.99, while the Xbox One is priced at $19.99.
