'Twin Peaks' TV Show Returns on Showtime: Premiere Release Date, Cast & Plot Spoilers
After finishing its showcase in ABC 25 years ago, the cult franchise "Twin Peaks" will officially return--thanks to its original creators. Deadline reported that the comeback, although limited to nine episodes, will be written and produced by David Lynch and Mark Frost.
Set at the present time, the new "Twin Peaks" will most certainly be a sequel following the events that surfaced decades ago. It is slated for a 2016 release as reported by CNN.
The sudden buzz on the comeback of the offbeat series stems from a video uploaded on Showtime's YouTube channel. Titled "A special TWIN PEAKS announcement," the teaser maintained the odd nature of the series--beginning with character Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) who took over 10 seconds of the 66-second clip. She raised her arm, stared blankly and flicked her fingers as if she dropped something. YouTube viewers came rushing.
"25 years ago...I was 16 years old and I loved this show," Bobbi Jo Woods commented.
Viewer Xanatos suggested, "The new season drops on June 10, 2016. 25 years to the day that the last episode aired. Can we all just take a moment to contemplate the psychotic commitment (or else mad trolling) involved here?"
Showtime promised that the new series will provide long-awaited answers to questions, and eventually culminate in a satisfying conclusion. In addition, the network announced that it will be re-airing the first two seasons.
The debut of "Twin Peaks" was original indeed, as the story centered on a theme that was so obscure. Starring Kyle MacLachlan as FBI agent Dale Cooper, the story takes place in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Peaks. Clueless about what's in store for him, Cooper arrives in the area to investigate the murder of a high school girl named Laura Palmer.
Ray Wise, Lara Flynn Boyle, Peggy Lipton and Joan Chen were all part of the original cast.
The cast of the upcoming limited installment has not been determined, according to Entertainment Weekly. Yet Lynch and Frost were said to like seeing the return of familiar faces. Kyle tweeted a possibility, "Better fire up that percolator and find my black suit... #Twinpeaks."
Frost and Lynch prepared the series' passionate fan base through their identically-cryptic tweets that mentioned a gum coming "back in style."
When asked by Deadline in another report about a new case to come up in the coming "Twin Peaks," Frost let out: "There will be a very strong central storyline."
