Manchester United Transfer Rumors 2013: PSG Wants Wayne Rooney To 'Name His Price'
Paris Saint-Germain has made it clear that it wants to purchase Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
According to ESPN, the French club has asked Rooney to "name his price" and is preparing a 30 million pound offer for his services. The club previously stated that it would be willing to pay Rooney a tremendous sum of 300,000 pounds per week.
Paris Saint-Germain's willingness to increase its price comes after Arsenal was reportedly interested in winning the Rooney sweepstakes. According to UK's The Mirror, "[Manager] Arsene Wenger is ready to smash Arsenal's wage structure to bring in a stellar signing like Wayne Rooney."
Manchester United is reportedly interested in keeping the former franchise cornerstone and new manager David Moyes is looking to meet with the forward to convince him to remain with the team.
Rooney is coming off a tough season with Manchester United. The English striker scored 12 goals in 27 games for Manchester United; he put 27 in 32 matches during the 2011-12 season. One of the reasons for his decreased production was the addition of Dutchman Robin Van Persie. Van Persie not only became the team's top scoring option, but also took the mantle of being the club's franchise star; Rooney was relegated to being the second option and was often benched in key matches by retiring manager Sir Alex Ferguson. It has been well documented that these benching, including one against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League 2013 Round of 16, caused problems between Ferguson and Rooney.
In one of the final matches of the year Rooney actually requested to be benched as a sign of protest. "I don't think Wayne Rooney was keen to play, simply because he's asked for a transfer," Ferguson revealed after the match. "He wants to think it through in his mind, which is a good idea. We are not going to let him go but he is a little bit frustrated at being taken off once or twice in the last few weeks."
Rooney still has two years remaining on his current contract with Manchester United.
