FIBA World Cup 2014: USA vs. Lithuania Preview: Lineups, Tipoff Time, TV & Live Stream Schedule
With only two games remaining until the FIBA World Cup final, the United States will have to face off against a tough Lithuanian team that specializes in overbearing opponents. Although there isn't too much hype around the FIBA Cup due to the sheer U.S. domination, this matchup could pose a problem for the favored Americans.
Team USA and Lithuania will tip-off Today at 12 p.m. (PT) on ESPN. The game can also be live streamed here on Watch ESPN.
In America's previous game against Slovenia, they got off to another cold start, but were able to fight back in the second half. After an offensive onslaught, the U.S. team rattled off a 70-34 point differential. Due in part to their brilliance, Team USA has the ability to be completely absent for one half of the game, but then make it up in the second. This was an acceptable form of victory against Slovenia, who was undersized in comparison. The strong center play for Lithuania could clog up America's drive game.
The beauty of Team USA is that there are so many weapons at Coach K's disposal. If James Harden or Stephen Curry has a poor shooting night, they can quickly be swapped out. Against Slovenia, both players had a terrible first half, but Kenneth Faried, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson were able to keep Team USA within striking distance.
With the sheer power of the U.S. bench, it's hard to imagine a scenario where America doesn't make it to the FIBA finals. There opponent will be between France and Serbia, two battle tested teams that could pose trouble for the U.S. France is likely riding high after taking down the favored Spain team, who early on was marked as America's greatest opponent. With both Gasol brothers playing for the Spanish national team, it would have made sense for the two powerhouses to meet up in the end.
So far in the tournament Lithuania has only lost one game, and that was to a talented Australia team. Their defense, rebounding and size advantage are all essential tools that could trip up the U.S. If by chance Lithuania was able to neutralize America's driving lanes, the game would undoubtedly turn into a different affair. With the tight defense in the middle of the court, Team USA will have to start off the night shooting hot from outside.
