Facebook Server Down Sept. 2014: Mobile & Desktop Users Couldn't Access Accounts
Facebook experienced an interruption in its service earlier today. For approximately 20 minutes the site simply displayed a message apologizing for the lack of service.
During the outage, Latino Post was able to confirm that Facebook was unavailable in parts of North America, including Mexico. We first noticed that the site was inaccessible at around 3:45 p.m. ET. We also confirmed it using isitdownrightnow.com and downforeveryoneorjustme.com.
The exact cause of the outage in service is unknown at this time. The site had been displaying a default message that read: "Sorry, something went wrong." Typically, sites like Facebook undergo routine maintenance on occasion and have to halt user access for periods of time; however, they don't usually do that sort ot maintenence during the busiest part of the day.
No doubt conspiracy theories will abound about a cyber attack from various activism (or hacktivism) groups, or even terrorists, but such rumors are--at least at this point--unfounded. The outage also couldn't have come at a worse time for the tech companies making product announcements today at Europe's IFA 2014 trade show. Both Sony and Samsung made huge product announcmenets today regarding their upcoming mobile device lineups, and Facebook is definitely one of the biggest avenues for sharing such info.
