Johnny Manziel Raises Middle Finger in Washington Redskins Match
It was an obscene Monday night for Johnny Manziel who raised his middle finger to the sideline during a match against the Washington Redskins at the FedEx Field.
Manziel has been battling with fellow quarterback Brian Hoyer for the starter position with the Cleveland Browns.
But coach Mike Pettine told Washington Post that he has still left open the position and revealed that he is just postponing his starter choice for the season.
"It's possible. I think all the options are on the table," Pettine added.
For his performance on Monday, Manziel said that he was not happy with the way he played.
"I didn't think I did a good job today. I think there's a lot of room for me to improve. "I wanted to be better. I wanted to complete more passes than I did tonight.... I'm hard on myself and I think I need to get a lot better," he told Washington Post.
During Monday's game, he was captured by the cameras raising his middle finger toward the opponent's sideline while he walked away and then headed back to the field.
"I get words exchanged with me throughout the entirety of the game every game, week after week. I should have been smarter. It was a Monday Night Football game. The cameras were probably solidly on me. So I just need to be smarter about that.... There's always words exchanged on the football field," Manziel explained.
The player added in the Washington Post article that his action was a result of a "lapse in judgment."
Despite Manziel's explanation, his coach was clearly not pleased.
"It does not sit well. I was informed of it after the game. It's disappointing. What we talked about is being poised and being focused. You have to be able to maintain your poise.... It's something that we'll obviously address with him," he was quoted by the Washington Post as saying.
The coach also said that he will choose the starter who can give the team the best chance to win the opener.
But Yahoo Sports explained that Johnny Footbal still did better compared to Hoyer who only went 2-for-6 for 16 yards with one sack taken. The report, however, noted that the overall offense of the Browns was "weak" and "self-destructive."
Yahoo Sports also noted that Manziel was able to just finish 7-of-16 for 65 yards during the game. It added that he managed to do an early touchdown during the fourth quarter but that he was sacked thrice because of "poorly thrown" balls.
