Cleveland Cavaliers Preview: Kevin Love Trade Update, Roster News & Vegas Odds
Kevin Love's time in Minnesota is quickly coming to an end, and for Cleveland Cavaliers fans, that end can't come soon enough. The Cavs and Love have a handshake agreement that says after Love's current deal runs out next year, he will resign with the team for five years at $120 million. With Love, LeBron and Kyrie Irving all potentially locked up with long term deals; the Cavaliers have positioned themselves for a potentially brilliant run.
The Cavalier's 'Big Three Era' is about to begin. In Miami, when LeBron was paired with Bosh and Wade, the experiment took a year before an NBA Championship was brought back home. The three personalities had to get aquainted with one another and figure out their defined roles before they succeeded.
Irving has been the center of the Cavs offense since he entered the league a few seasons ago. Love was in a similar situation with the Minnesota Timberwolves, which could very well have padded his stats. LeBron will likely be the focal point of the new Cavs offense, with Love acting in the Chris Bosh role. Irving will have to improve on his catch and shoot game if he is to be a viable force.
The Cavs have been hunting for shooters, which will act as outlets and decoys to free up the driving lanes for LeBron and Irving. The Cavs have added Mike Miller and reportedly will sign Shawn Marion to help spread the floor by knocking down the three-ball. Love set a Timberwolves record last season when he nailed 190 three-pointers at 37 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Defense will be a testy subject with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Varejao is a decent rim protector and LeBron can shut down whomever he wants, but Love and Irving have never been defensive threats. The Miami Heat played small ball but they were tough on defense. It will be interesting to see how well the Cleveland Cavaliers are able to play both ways.
The Cavs were 4:1 Vegas favorites in July after the pickup of LeBron James. Now that the Kevin Love deal is nearly etched in stone, Las Vegas has increased their odds to 5:2. If the Cavs do make it to the Finals it would be a rare occurrence to see a team with such a quick turnaround. The Cavs have already gone from missing the playoffs last year to being the odds-on favorites to win it all next season. Only time will tell if they can actually pull it off.
