Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid Hit Mexico

A tropical storm on one coast coupled with a hurricane on the other coast has led heavy rains to pour down over Mexico. The storm and hurricane combination caused heavy flooding and landslides.

According to a report, the lethal combination, which greatly affected Mexico's Gulf and Pacific coasts, has killed 21 people to date.

"There is a lot of water and the rivers are full," Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator for Mexico's emergency services, told Reuters in an interview.

The Mexican government has already issued an alert for Ingrid, the tropical storm which has now become a hurricane, September 14.

"This will remain a significant hazard over the next couple of days," the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said in a report by Bloomberg. "The moist flow resulting from the combination of Manuel and tropical storm Ingrid in the bay of Campeche will produce torrential rains and life-threatening flooding over eastern Mexico."

Hurricane Ingrid is a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. Ingrid is expected to get stronger before reaching land Monday morning.

Due to hurricane Ingrid, towns in Tamaulipas have already cancelled Independence Day celebration plans supposedly scheduled Sunday night. Traditionally, townsfolk gather in the town square and hear local officials give "El Grito." "El Grito" is an adaptation of Miguel Hidalgo's original call to arms against the Spanish in 1810.

Tropical storm Manuel, on the other hand, has weakened after its landfall. It had maximum sustained winds of up to 35 miles per hour and was already moving northwest by late Sunday. Officials are still warning townspeople due to high risks of flashfloods and landslides, reports IBN Live.

Tropical storm Manuel has also greatly affected the Pacific. 15 inches of "torrential rains" was expected to hit Oaxaca and Guerrero. Almost the same amount of rainfall was expected of Ingrid, which was bound to hit the eastern part of the state.

Out of the 21 casualties of hurricane Ingrid and tropical storm Manuel, 14 of the confirmed deaths were from Guerrero. According to the Western Wheel, people died mostly due to landslides, drowning and a truck which has crashed in the slippery mountain highway.
