According to ESPN, "Mayweather is hoping to erase any doubt about what happened on May 3 when he faced Maidana for the first time and won a majority decision -- 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114 -- to unify 147-pound world titles in a very tough fight, one of the most competitive and entertaining of his career."
In a statement, Mayweather said he's confident that he will secure another win against Maidana.
"Marcos Maidana is a tough customer and he gave me a fight that had me work for the victory. His style is difficult at best, but with experience comes a way and will to win. I'm not one to give second chances in the ring, but I want to give the fans what they want to see. I will be as prepared as I always am when I step in the ring on September 13. I only see the outcome one way and that's another successful night for me and my team."
ESPN noted that Mayweather could have picked Maidana as his next opponent because negotiations with Manny Pacquiao's camp have failed to come up with an agreement.
Showtime Vice President Stephen Espinoza told Los Angeles Times in an interview that when they look back at the match of Mayweather and Maidana last May, they realize how "competitive and exciting" it was. "That's why we wanted to do it again," he noted.
"We saw a Mayweather opponent that came to fight, connected on Mayweather more than any other opponent and made him work every second of every round. Everyone came away satisfied. Maidana learned some important lessons. Mayweather wasn't particularly satisfied. It was a simple decision to do it again," Espinoza told Los Angeles Times.
The Showtime executive added that further announcements on the fight will be made starting next week. In terms of pay-per-view numbers, it would be a "financial success" for all parties, Espinoza revealed.
Mayweather is considered by Forbes as the highest paid athlete with $105 million earnings between June 2013 and June 2014.
The Maidana-Mayweather first matchup, according to Forbes sources, made around 900,000 in PPV numbers.
