World Cup Resumes
Argentina - 16 tournament appearances, 2 championships (1978, 1986), 2 second place finishes (1930, 1990)
Germany - 18 tournament appearances, 3 championships (1954, 1974, 1990), 4 second place finishes (1966, 1982, 1986, 2002)
According to Bleacher Report, these two clubs first faced off in 1986 when Argentina legend, Diego Maradona, led his club to victory in Mexico City. Four years later, Germany returned the favor to even the rivalry a one a piece.
Though these two clubs appear evenly matched in overall tournament success, it should be noted that Germany has eliminated Argentina from the last two World Cup tournaments. Germany appears to be the favorite given their success in this World Cup.
In fact, they have yet to lose a match and beat Brazil in the semi-final match 7-1 and have scored 17 goals in just five matches so far.
Argentina, however, should not be written off just yet. Though known for their offense, Messi and his club have allowed just three goals in the tournament. Their keeper, Sergio Romero, had two shootout saves to put them past the Netherlands and into the final match.
As for Messi himself, the legend will look to finally fulfill his destiny as one of the greatest footballers ever by propelling his club to the ultimate victory. But it won't be easy for the Argentina star, as the Netherlands played him tough and may have given Germany a gameplan for stifling him.
Look for Germany to suffocate him with their deep roster or even employ a few hard tackles, like the Netherlands did.
Either way you slice it, this looks to be one for the ages.
Prediction - Romero and the Argentina defense find a way to stifle Muller & Co. enough for Messi to be the difference.
Argentina over Germany 3-2.
