The latest research shows that the online landscape is rapidly evolving when it comes to social media apps in Latin America.

From November 2011 to November 2012, overall traffic from unique visitors to social media sites only increased 2%. But according to Latin Link, there have been recent dramatic shifts in the popularity of several sites among Latin Americans, and we've listed them below for you.

This is not the site with the most users; that title still remains with Facebook (and probably always will), but this site has grown at an amazing rate in Latin America -- by a whopping 5,000 percent, in fact -- and that growth is much higher than any other social media site.

Ask.fm allows users to ask and answer each other's questions, and provides a different form of interaction than most "traditional" social sites. Unique visitors per month skyrocketed from 247,000 in Novermber 2011 to 13 million just one year later.

#2 - Pinterest

During that time, unique visitors per month increased from 77,000 to 2 million.

#3 - Scribd

Scribd allows users to share documents with each other and saw a 97% increase in unique monthly users in just one year, arriving at 6.6 million uniques in November 2012.

#4 - Tumblr

Tumblr ranks among the top ten social media sites in a lot of Latin American markets. Recent overal growth has been enormous, with an 86% increase to 12 million unique visitors per month.

#5 - Weheartit

We Heart It provides users with the ability to share images of things they like with other users--much like Pinterest. In the past year, the site has seen a 43% increase in traffic and now boasts close to 3 million unique visitors per month.
