Manny Pacquiao Next Fight 2014: Mayweather Says 'Big Surprise' Coming in May
Although Floyd Mayweather has already announced that it will be a rematch between him and Marcos Maidana this September, the undefeated boxer also hinted that he still has a "big surprise" for his fans and the whole boxing world come May 2015. Could this big surprise be a fight with Manny Pacquiao?
During an awards ceremony on Sunday, Mayweather told the media about his future plans after his rematch with Maidana. He mentioned the surprise but didn't name names. The public, however, noted that no one matched the "big surprise" description except Pacquiao.
"September 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana v Floyd Mayweather part two. Then in May, I'll have a big surprise for you," Mayweather was quoted by International Business Times as saying.
In a similar report, Boxing News said that Mayweather could not be talking about Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto or other boxers who are lining up to fight with him. The report also added that if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will happen, it will be a "huge match," but Mayweather will be controlling the details of the fight.
Boxing News is also speculating that the pay-per-view record for the anticipated fight will break Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya's record in 2007 when the two recorded 2.4 million buys. The same report noted that the American fighter can make an additional $10 million to $20 million than what he earned from his previous fights if he decides to face Pacquiao.
The fight of the two have been long planned and rumored to happen five years ago but it never happened due to disagreements in both camps. International Business Times also claimed that the delay was affected by drug testing issues and split of the earnings. It added that Mayweather also refused to deal with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum who is currently handling Pacquiao.
The Filipino boxer has expressed his willingness to fight Mayweather years ago, but according to some reports, Pacquiao has, at one point, grown tired of waiting for the match to happen.
Mayweather, on the other hand, has entertained possibilities of fighting other boxers like Amir Khan for the first part of 2015, International Business Times reported. This rumor was highlighted when Mayweather claimed that he wanted to fight at the Wembley Stadium in London, Khan's home country. Khan was also included in the list of possible opponents for Mayweather in September but expressed that he cannot fight because of his Ramadan observance.
For his part, Pacquiao has just defeated Timothy Bradley in April and has scheduled another fight before the year ends. He was hoping to face Juan Manuel Marquez for the fifth time but Marquez's camp did not show interest, saying Marquez has already proven himself after a knocknout victory against Pacquiao in 2012.
