The World Cup: Round of 16, U.S. vs. Belgium, TV Schedule, Watch Live Stream Free, and Preview
After stumbling into the "Round of 16," the U.S. will be taking on a feverish team, the Red Devils of Belgium.
The U.S. started the World Cup off hot against Ghana, but in their next two matches forced a draw against Portugal and fell to Germany.
Belgium is undefeated so far in the World Cup, but their wins haven't been blowouts. Two 1-0 games against Russia and Korea, and their comeback 2-1 victory over Algeria are nothing to brag about.
Both the U.S. and Belgium have netted four goals this World Cup, setting up a seemingly even matched faceoff.
In their first match against Ghana, the U.S. lost its star forward Jozy Altidore to a hamstring strain. U.S. manager Jürgen Klinsmann stated that Altidore, after missing two games, will be ready to go Tuesday if need be. It is not clear yet whether Altidore will start or come off the bench.
Either way, Altidore brings an element of raw speed that will keep the Belgium backline from creeping too far off the field.
Belgium has suffered multiple injuries to their starters, which could have a positive effect for the U.S. team.
Centerback Vincent Kompany of Manchester United is listed as questionable for Tuesday's match, and Laurent Ciman, Anthony Vanden Borre and Thomas Vermaelen will be out.
With so many starters on the bench, Belgium will look to their secondary unit for the defensive support that they are famous for. Belgium has yet to give up a World Cup goal, which will not make this an easy run for the U.S.
Coming off of a loss against Germany, the U.S. will look to get their offense back on track.
Although the match was well-played, the U.S. failed to net a goal against the German machine.
In Monday's match between Germany and Algeria, it took 92 minutes for Germany to score their first goal. This seems to allude to Germany's poor play being the reason that their match was only 1-0 against the U.S.
The U.S. has not made it to the World Cup quarterfinals since 2002. The hopes and dreams of the Stars and Stripes will come down to their offensive performance.
With Belgium scoring and allowing so few goals, whatever team is able to break through the lines will likely win the match.
The U.S. and Belgium get underway on ESPN and 1 p.m. (PT). The match can be streamed online at ESPN.
