BET Awards Beef: Nicki Minaj Disses Iggy Azalea During Acceptance Speech
Iggy Azalea has had quite a year. Her single, "Fancy," has enjoyed the top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 for five weeks in a row, and she has rocketed to superstardom in the short time since it was released last February.
She has also occupied the number two spot on Billboard's list for the last five weeks as well with her appearance on Ariana Grande's hit "Problem" as well. Pretty impressive, considering that the only artist to occupy both top spots on the Hot 100 for more than five weeks is the Beatles, with 10 consecutive weeks.
Such rarified success is bound to bring all sorts of attention, and not all of it can be positive. Perhaps that's why Nicki Minaj took the time during her BET Awards acceptance speech for Best Female Hip Hop Artist to not-so-subtely dis Azalea.
Minaj has won the award for five consecutive years, and many felt this was the year her reign would end, given the meteoric success Azalea has experienced this year; but it was not the case.
According to Gawker, while Minaj accepted her award, she said, "What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it."
This was perceived as a shot at Azalea because the word around the industry is that Iggy has employed ghost writers in the past while composing her songs.
Minaj then went on to remove all doubt regarding just exactly who she was referring to by striking several Azaleaesque poses while at the mic, which drew a reaction from the crowd.
Minaj then smiled wryly and said, "No, no, no shade, no, no, no shade," reports Gawker.
Shade refers to the term "throwing shade" which is supposed to be a sort of indirect or subtle insult, but for a more in depth definition you should really go here.
Nicki rambled on for a while before returning to her attack on Azalea by finishing with, "I hope and pray that BET continues to honor authenticity," according to Gawker.
So far, Azalea has yet to respond officially to Minaj's remarks, but in her crusade for authenticity, Minaj seems to have laid the ground work for an epic feud between two of hip hop's biggest stars.
Only time will tell if the beef is authentic or not.
