Opt Outs by Wade and Bosh Lead to Speculation about Miami Heat's "Big Three"
Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade have informed the Miami Heat that they will opt out of their current contracts.
The move comes a week after LeBron James opted out, leading to speculation about the future of the "Big Three." Miami Heat General Manager Pat Riley has insisted that this is all according to plan.
The 'Big Three' will restructure their contracts in order to free up cap space for another big name free agent.
Along with Wade and Bosh, Heat veteran Udonis Haslem also opted out of his current deal, leaving $5 million on the table.
With four Miami Heat players opting out of their current deals, the stage is set for a big free agent acquisition. The Miami Heat now has $55 million in cap space, with only Norris Cole and Shabazz Napier on the books for next season.
When the "Big Three" came together, Bosh and James were paid the same amount, with Wade making a little less.
If James does decide to resign with the Heat, chances are he will demand to be the highest paid player on the team. In James' career he has never had the highest salary on his team.
In Cleveland, Ben Wallace and Shaquille O'Neal made more money than James, and in Miami, Bosh made the same amount. The restructuring of the Heat's contracts will seek to pay players based on how much each is worth, with Wade probably taking a big pay cut do his recent decline in talent.
$55 million in cap space is enough to make a play for a top free agent. The Heat could look to sign Kevin Love, who would help give the Heat some size. The Miami Heat have always been an undersized team, and their lack of rebounding against the Spurs in the NBA Finals cost them dearly. Love would be a great addition to the team, adding scoring ability and size.
It has been wildly speculated that the Miami Heat are trying to acquire Carmelo Anthony, but this is highly unlikely. Melo has never been a defensive threat, and his high volume of shots would take away touches from the other three stars on the Heat roster.
Landing Kevin Love is a win-win on both sides of the ball for Miami. If the Heat cannot get Love, then their next best bet is to shoot for Toronto guard Kyle Lowry. The Miami Heat have always been weak at the guard spot with the erratic play of Mario Chambers, who was a nonfactor in the 2014 Playoffs.
The Miami Heat "Big Three" have to realize that their best shot at scoring another title is by sticking together. The trifecta could disassemble but that would mean starting over at square one. Their best bet is too stick it out in Miami and retool, instead of wiping the slate clean.
