Arsenal Transfer News Update 2013: Luis Suarez Reportedly Staying At Liverpool
Luis Suarez is likely to remain at Liverpool.
Recent reports indicate that the Uruguayan striker is happy with the fan support he has received and may be looking to sign an extension with the team.
"Luis Suarez confirms to me that he will not leave Liverpool. The support of the fans in recent weeks influenced his decision," tweeted reporter Martin Charquero. "Suarez sees it as likely that he'll sign a renewal (extension) to the contract that binds him to Liverpool."
A Suarez signing could end the lengthy and often tumultuous transfer saga. The striker recently told reporters that he was promised a transfer away from the club if a 40 million pound offer was made and if Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions league.
"They gave me their word a year ago and now I want them to honor that," he told the media. "And it is not just something verbal with the coach but something that is written in the contract. I'm not going to another club to hurt Liverpool."
His club refuted the claim and stated that no promise was made; Coach Brendan Rodgers even demanded that the player apologize to his teammates for the drama he created. Suarez reportedly refused to apologize but the latest news indicates that conciliation may be near.
If the melodrama ends happily for Liverpool and Suarez, then Arsenal and Arsene Wenger will be the sad bunch. The English side missed out on the Gonzalo Higuain sweepstakes and had made numerous offers to land Suarez. Now it seems that the club may start next season without an elite striker to rely on.
