Utah Woman Arrested in Suspected Killing of 6 Babies Found Inside Garage
A Utah mother is facing multiple counts of murder after police discovered seven dead babies on Sunday in the garage of her former home. Six of the infant bodies were stuffed inside of cardboard boxes.
Megan Huntsman, 39, is believed to be the mother of all the dead infants. Authorities suspect that she killed them at various times between 1996 and 2006 before she moved out of the Pleasant Grove home in 2011, reports Fox News. According to reports, she was charged with only six counts of murder because police believe that one was a stillborn.
Police were called to the house on Saturday after Huntsman's ex-husband, Darren West, discovered the body of a newborn infant who appeared to be at full term while cleaning out the garage, reports the New York Daily News. Police then obtained a search warrant for the house and found the bodies of six more babies placed in boxes inside the garage.
Police Capt. Michael Roberts said that investigators are still working on DNA tests, but West is believed to be the father of all seven children. He discovered the bodies after recently getting out of prison. However, authorities do not believe West was aware of the killings and is not a person of interest.
Roberts said police believe West and Huntsman were together when the babies were born. "We don't believe he had any knowledge of the situation," Roberts told The Associated Press. When asked how the father could not have known about the situation, Roberts said, "That's the million-dollar question. Amazing."
Huntsman's neighbors say the mother seemed to live a normal life. Others said that they were shocked by the accusations and perplexed that the Huntman's teenage daughter and two young adult daughters didn't know their mother was pregnant or notice anything suspicious.
A motive for the murders has not been announced.
