NFL Trade Rumors: Are New York Jets Looking to Trade CB Kyle Wilson?
The New York Jets are reportedly preparing to trade cornerback Kyle Wilson, who is one of the nine first-round picks selected by former general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
ESPN New York NFL insider Rich Cimini reported that the 26-year-old Wilson has become the latest Jets player who could be traded this season, as the team looks to add assets or players with the ability to make an impact on the field. According to Cimini, Wilson might be on his way out of New York after the Jets eliminated cornerback Derrelle Revis, Dustin Keller and Mark Sanchez—all three selected by Tannenbaum.
Entering the final year of his contract, Wilson will be facing a stiff challenge to lock in a starting nod after the Jets brought a pair of competition this offseason. Moreover, the Jets are projected to use one of their picks for a cornerback, which could validate speculation that Wilson's days with the team are numbered.
"They've already sent a message to Wilson, acquiring two slot corners -- Dimitri Patterson and Johnny Patrick. (They also lost one, Isaiah Trufant.) The activity has fueled speculation in league circles that Wilson is on the way out. That's premature -- the Jets aren't thinking that way -- but it'll be interesting to see how it shakes out if they draft a cornerback in the first or second round, a definite possibility," Cimini reported.
Football insiders already predicted Wilson's forthcoming departure from New York, largely due to his inconsistency on the field. Wilson had over 2,000 snaps with the Jets' defensive unit, but he only came up with six impact plays. ESPN stats indicated that Wilson only recorded three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
Wilson also revealed that a rival AFC executive, who chose to remain anonymous, also rated Wilson as a hard-working and durable player, but can't provide the goods when needed.
"He's a durable, hard-working player, but it's all about making plays. Clearly, the organization has added competition, so Wilson will have to raise his game if he wants to play out his contract in New York," Cimini stated.
