NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Minnesota Timberwolves Have No Plan to Trade Kevin Love, Will Offer Contract Extension This Summer
The Minnesota Timberwolves will have a tough decision to make this summer regarding Kevin Love's future with the team, but reports indicate that front office executives are willing to roll the dice.
Most executives are convinced that Love, who could become a free agent in the summer of 2015, will likely be dealt this summer or before next season's trade deadline.
It is no secret that Love has been disappointed with the team's failure to make the playoffs in his first five seasons in the league; the Timberwolves are on the verge of missing the playoffs yet again this season.
But while it is becoming more likely that Love will look for a change of scenery, Basketball Insiders reported that Timberwolves executives are not planning to entertain trade offers for the All-Star forward.
"The popular opinion is that the Wolves have to move Love this summer while they can control the market in some ways and extract the most value out of a trade involving Love. However, the word around the team is that not only will the Wolves not move their star this summer," Basketball Insiders noted.
The Timberwolves are still confident that they can convince Love to stay in Minnesota because they can offer him biggest contract.
Reports also indicated that some people in the organization are convinced that firing coach Rick Adelman and hiring a new coach this summer could entice Love to sign a long-term deal with the Timberwolves.
"There are still some in the organization that believe the right coaching hire and the ability to offer him the most guaranteed money for his services could sway Love into a new long-term deal," Basketball Insiders noted.
Keeping Love off the trading block will put the Timberwolves in a risky situation because they could lose the 25-year-old power forward via free agency in 2015, and get no compensation in return.
Several teams are already preparing to make a splash in the summer of 2015, including the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls.
The Lakers are reportedly Love's preferred destination based on previous reports, but Basketball Insiders' Steve Kyler revealed that the former UCLA standout will consider all options.
