MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Want to Trade Ike Davis; Pittsburgh Pirates Likely Destination for First Baseman
The New York Mets are not giving up on their plan to get decent compensation in exchange for the services of first baseman Ike Davis. A source close to the situation reported that the Mets are still shopping the slugger with the hope of finally pulling off a deal.
According to Andy Martino of New York Daily News, the Mets are certain their plan will work to trade the 27-year-old Davis, who is batting .243 with 68 home runs and 223 RBIs in his four-year tenure with the ball club.
"Sources: #Mets still see trading Ike Davis as likely endgame, but like offseason still looking for something decent back. #Pirates?" Martino posted on his Twitter account.
The Mets have been trying to move Davis since the offseason, but they failed to hammer out a deal with suitors such as the Baltimore Orioles and the Pittsburgh Pirates because of New York's high asking price. Davis was considered a top-notch prospect in the Mets' farm system a few years ago, but his inconsistency and struggles against MLB pitchers are certainly a concern for other teams.
Moreover, FanSided.com reporter Bryan Rose reported that Mets manager Terry Collins is leaning towards giving the regular starting spot at first base to Lucas Duda, who has already recorded two homers and 4 RBIs in 13 at-bat appearances.
"Currently the Mets are running with Lucas Duda as their first baseman after manager Terry Collins hinted he wanted to give him an 'extended look', so Davis appears to be the odd man out," wrote Rose.
The Mets could have moved Davis as early as winter, but the team's front office backed out of a deal with the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles reportedly offered left-hander Zach Britton, but the Mets wanted Baltimore's third best prospect, Eduardo Rodriguez.
Analysts believe the Mets are waiting for the Pirates to put an enticing trade offer on the table. Loaded with assets both in the major leagues and in their minor league farm system, Pittsburgh can certainly get the job done on the trade market early into the season.
