Witnesses say that a young man was shot and killed by the campus police at Georgia's Columbus State University over the weekend as he was running away on foot.

On Sunday afternoon, campus officers responded to a report of someone seen loading a gun around 2:30 p.m. When police arrived, they chased the man identified as 20-year-old Zikarious Jaquan Flint on foot near apartments on campus, authorities said. During the pursuit, an officer shot and killed Flint.

"There was a short foot chase and at some point the suspect turned and faced the officers and shots were fired," University Police Chief Rus Drew said, reports the Associated Press. He added that there were some student witnesses.

After being shot at a dormitory, Flint was transported to Midtown Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:29 p.m.

GBI is investigating this case since an officer was involved in the shooting.

"This is a terrible tragedy," CSU President Tim Mescon said, according to Waff.com. "We will cooperate fully with the investigation by GBI. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this, as well as their families."

According to the Flint family attorney Stacey Jackson, three witnesses said in a written statement: "Flint was running away when he was shot and did not have any type of weapon in his hand when he was shot twice. At least one medical personnel at the hospital described the injuries to his parents as one being a shot to the back that exited out of his stomach and another shot in the lower region of the back of his head and neck area which penetrated his mouth area and broke his jaw. Two other witnesses who heard shots and at least one ran around the corner and actually saw Flint's body and saw similar injuries to his body."

Jackson added, "Video cameras are attached to the building. I am hoping the GBI investigates whether the cameras were working and whether any video exists of the shooting."
