Mayweather vs. Maidana News: Marcos Maidana Vows to Fight for Title, Not for Money
Marcos Maidana vowed to be at his best in his upcoming showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, insisting that he will fight to win and not just for the money.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Maidana said that he is motivated to win not because of the big money he is set to receive, but because of the opportunity to do what 43 other boxers failed to do before—defeat Mayweather.
"A lot of people think I'm going to the United States for the purse money, but I am going for the title and glory," Maidana stressed.
Maidana, the reigning WBA welterweight champion, said that he is training harder than ever, and has been watching a lot of tapes of Mayweather's previous fights to find holes that he can exploit on fight night.
"I know I am going to win. I have all the desire to defeat Mayweather to make boxing history. I watched a lot of Mayweather fights looking for his mistakes, although he rarely makes them," Maidana said.
The 30-year-old Argentine is coming off a sensational unanimous decision win over Adrien Broner in their welterweight title showdown in December last year.
Maidana plans to be as aggressive as he was during the Broner bout, but he also knows that he has to step up big time since Mayweather is far better than Broner. And if needed, Maidana also said that he is willing to fight "a little bit dirty" to give the undefeated a champion a taste of his own medicine.
"I have to fight Mayweather with all my tools, just like the way he fights, a little bit dirty, but very intelligently," Maidana said in a RingTV interview. "He has fought many great fighters I don't know how hard they punched him, but on May 3, I am going to check him. He hardly makes any mistakes at all. He's too good, but we'll see."
