NY Yankees News and Rumors: Yankees Could Trade Ichiro Suzuki to Philadelphia Phillies for Bullpen Help
The New York Yankees could reportedly consider trading veteran hitter Ichiro Suzuki to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for some bullpen help.
Despite their acquisition of a bevy of big time free agents such as Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran and Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees are still looking to improve their roster by adding more quality personnel in their bullpen.
ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney believes the Yankees should explore a possible trade with the Phillies for relief pitcher Mike Adams, who could find himself on the trading block despite coming off arm surgery this season.
"Ichiro Suzuki does not have a no-trade clause, and he appears to be the odd man out in the NYY outfield. The Phillies need outfield help," Olney posted on his Twitter account.
Suzuki Trade Scenario
After a dismal 2013 season, Suzuki could be the odd man out in the Yankees lineup, especially after the ballclub already committed to 30-year-old outfielder Brett Gardner. The Yankees and Phillies could both address their needs by pulling off a trade that would find the Yankees sending Suzuki and the final year of his two-year deal to the Phillies in exchange for Adams.
"Swapping Ichiro for Mike Adams makes far too much sense for a deal not to happen, in my opinion. For one, Ichiro won't find significant playing time with the Yankees. Having his salary sit on the bench and gather dust would be a waste of resources," wrote Kenny DeJohn for Bleacher Report.
With regards to Adams' current health situation, the pitcher stressed that he's already reaching his peak shape after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder last season.
"I think it [his weekend bullpen session] went real good-very, very good. I've noticed the advances I've made over the last couple bullpens and how it's coming out of my hand. Right now, everything is going the way I'd hoped," Adams told Paul Hagen of MLB.com.
